DOSE GLASS COLLECTOR
Recently acquired glasses for my collection...
This page will highlight glasses that I have recently added to my collection and a word or two about why I chose to purchase them.
Test / The Druggist
I liked this one because it sounds like a game show title... Test The Druggist, and for the fancy script word "TEST." I found out that it is actually from the town of Tulare, CA. Population 2758 per the 1913 ERA Druggists' Directory. Started as a railroad town, then later an agricultural center. Town named after what was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes, now dried up (Tulare Lake). Lake was named after the tule rush, a plant that grew on its banks.
L. Silbert / Confectionery and Soda
I first thought this was a Harrisburg, PA drug store. Later found several internet references to Lewis Silbert, Confectioner. Ethnicity: Russian Jew, whose store windows advertised in Hebrew - candies, ice cream, and soda water. Listed earlier at 124 Cowden St. in 8th ward, by 1913 he had moved residence and business to address shown on the glass. He had previously owned a Cigar store and would later become a real estate agent. Info gathered from www.old8thward.com. I'll keep this one as a non-pharmacy related business and maybe look for others in that category.
L.C. Wheeler, Pharmacist
Wheel + R = Wheeler! How nifty is that?! Too bad it has a fair sized chip at the rim which I am hiding with my finger. How sad is that?! Embossed: L.C. Wheeler / (image of the letter "R" superimposed over a spoked wheel) / Pharmacist / Peoria, ILL.
Elliott Brothers, Brisbane
I used to be a beekeeper myself, so I've always wanted to own this Elliott Brothers glass from Brisbane, Australia. For now, I will settle for this example with the huge straw mark running from top to bottom. I hope that it is only a straw mark and not a crack, but it is very difficult to tell with this one. Bees and bee hives have long been symbols of industry, resourcefulness and co-operation. This may be why E.B. choose it as part of their logo.
Follmer
Another interesting "unknown" glass. Nice script lettering. Suspected to be from J.S. Follmer, Milton, PA. Simply embossed: Follmer (in fancy script on diagonal)
M.A. Elliott, Camden, AR
I always like to find a nice monogrammed glass. With a bit of research I was able to confirm this one being from Camden, Arkansas. Embossed: M.A. Elliott, Druggist / (MAE monogram) / Camden
Short, Indianapolis
Sometimes I come up a bit short myself, but had just enough to purchase this nice glass from Indiana. Embossed: Short / The / Druggist / Indianopolis
Dutton Crockery, Oskaloosa, IA
Here is a glass, unusual in the fact that it does not have drug store related advertising. What a crock!
Embossed: S.J. Dutton / Crockery / Oskaloosa, Iowa
Adams The Druggist
I bought this great little glass with its big, bold lettering advertising ADAMS / THE / DRUGGIST. However, I don't know him (ADAMS) from Adam's house cat. I'm all tuckered out and worn to a frazzle trying to get the scoop on it. Not being able to figure this out has got me madder than a wet settin' hen. I fixin' to give up on messing with it. Seller says, "it was found in Parkersburg, West Virginia at an estate auction." But, it still has me stumped.
Another from New Orleans
New Orleans produced many dose glasses with pictures embossed. Here is yet another that I have added to my collection, where everyday is like a Mardi Gras! This one is embossed, Alex.K. Finlay / (pic mortar and pestle) / New Orleans.
L.I.S. of Pottstown, PA
I found another cool druggist's dose spoon for the collection. Several really special glass spoons are found from PA. See photos on Pg. 3 of Dose Glass News section of this web site for a related article entitled, "Hope you brought your spoon." This new acquisition is embossed L.I. Shuler / (L.I.S. monogram) / Pottstown, PA. The letters L and I are angled and crossed to form what looks like an X, superimposed on the letter S, in it's monogram.
The name is Bond... James Bond
This one had been on my want list for a number of years, but I was finally able to add it to my collection. Possibly the coolest name ever for a drug store. Live & Let Live / Drug Store / Hot Springs [Arkansas]. James Bond fans will remember a movie with a similar name (and a certain Paul McCartney song will pop into your head).
