DOSE GLASS COLLECTOR
MY 50 STATE DOSE GLASS QUEST...
I have been asked to share a little information on my quest to find one embossed dose glass from each of the 50 states in the USA. When I first started collecting dose glasses, I did not have this goal in mind, mainly due to the degree of difficulty. Before deciding to go for it, I passed on several glasses that I later regretted not buying. Early in the quest, I did not know the rarity of some of these glasses, especially from a few particular states. A Salt Lake City glass comes to mind that I saw, but did not pursue. It really didn't sell for that much, but I just didn't know that I was going to need it or that it would be so long before another came up for sale. I would have gotten farther a lot quicker, if I had set my goal from the beginning. It was when I happened upon my Alaska glass (around 1996-97) that I knew that a 50 state collection would be a real possibility. After deciding to forge ahead, it was just about all I could think about. The next hurtle was to find a glass from Hawaii, because I just knew that it was going to be difficult. Actually, I had a hard time just trying to determine if there was such a glass out there. I finally confirmed the existence of a Hawaiian glass after conducting a public library, interlibrary loan of a small book published years ago on the subject of collecting Hawaiian bottles. Anybody remember card catalogs, the dewy decimal system and/or microfiche? Anyway, I digress. In this book, there was a pitiful little black and white photo of a dose glass from a Hawaiian drug store. It was exciting just knowing. Fast forward several years... When I purchased my Hawaiian glass (and it was not the one pictured in the little book), I just knew it that I was truly on my way and this was going to eventually happen for me. Who could have imagined that South Carolina was going to be the pièce de résistance? But, as you can see, I have FINALLY fulfilled the dream. The very last glass that I acquired to complete the collection was one from SOUTH CAROLINA, which I purchased in August of 2014.
The following is a list and a photo of my best (and sometimes only) example from each state. In some cases, I would like to find a better example from a particular state. It may be that I have seen pictures of a glass from that state that appeals to me more than the one that I already own. I do have in mind my idea of the ultimate 50 State Collection. As many collectors know, the fun of collecting is trying to make that "ultimate collection" a reality... so the search continues!
